Guy de Maupassant (1850-93) schlug nach Abbruch des Jurastudiums die Beamtenlaufbahn ein und begann unter Anleitung Flauberts zu schreiben. Innerhalb eines Jahrzehnts verfaßte er über zweihundertfünfzig Novellen und sechs Romane, die sich allesamt durch nüchterne Objektivität der Darstellung, universalen Desillusionismus und hohe stilistische Meisterschaft auszeichnen. Guy de Maupassant ist einer der großen Romanciers Frankreichs. Existentielle Konflikte, Milieuschilderungen und psychologische Analyse machen seine seine Romane und Novellen zur auch heute noch fesselnden Lektüre.
