Uncle Tom’s Cabin is the most popular, influential and controversial book written by an American. Harriet Beecher-Stowe wurde am 14. Juni 1811 in Litchfield (Connecticut) geboren und starb am 1. Juli 1896 in Hartford (Connecticut). Mit 16 wurde sie Lehrerin in Hartford, 1832 zog die Familie nach Cincinnati, wo Harriet vier Jahre später den Theologieprofessor Calvin Stowe heiratete. 1843 erschien ihr erster Band mit Erzählungen "The Mayflower", 1852 wurde "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in Buchform veröffentlicht. Der überwältigende Erfolg des Romans machte Stowe über Nacht zur Vorkämpferin der Abolitionisten. Auf zahlreichen Reisen, die sie mehrfach auch nach Europa führten, setzte sie sich für die Aufhebung der Sklaverei ein.
